leafChristmas Trees

Christmas trees make wonderful additions to any home for the holiday season. To ensure the beauty and safety of your tree, it is important to follow these methods of general care:

Allow the tree to thaw indoors for a day before decorating. This reduces the chance of breaking branches. To increase the water absorption of the tree, make a fresh cut 1 inch up from the bottom of the trunk.

Select a tree stand that conforms with the size of the tree. Secure the tree firmly in teh stand. Display the tree in an area away from heat vents, fireplaces or space heaters. Be careful to place the tree away from drapes or other potentially flammable materials.

Fill the tree stand with water daily to maintain an abundant moisture source and prevent tree dry-out.

Type of Trees at All Seasons*

  • Scotch Pine - An aromatic tree, blue-green in color. The Scotch Pine is a commonly used Christmas tree because of its medium length needles and good needle retention.
  • White Pine - Long needles and flexible branches leave the White Pine very soft to the touch. Appropriate for ornaments that are light in weight. Good needle retention.
  • Spruce - Spruce are characteristically short-needled and very symmetrical in shape. The short needles make the spruce sharp to the touch.
  • Fraser Fir - One of the most popular Christmas trees that has a pleasant scent, dark green needles, and excellent needle retention.

*May not all be available depending on the year

Herbs in the Homeleaf

Garden year round with herbs! Herbs are happy to grow on your sunny windowsill (just make sure it's not drafty!). Herbs need lots of light, at least 12 hours a day, so you may need to supplement sunlight with artificial light, fluorescent works best. Herbs like air circulation that can be provided by a small fan, and they prefer cooler to average room temperatures. Water when the surface feels dry and avoid letting your herbs dry out. Check them daily, especially if they are in smaller containers. Culinary herbs should be pinched back often to encourage new growth.

All Seasons has everything you need including seeds, plants, seed starting kits, and answers to any herb-growing questions you might have!

Planning Your Gardenleaf

Winter is a perfect time to think about gardening! Not only will it help you fight the winter blues, planning will make your spring go a little smoother too.

Draw a scale map of how you will arrange your garden, and make a plan that includes your arrangement of crops, kinds of vegetables and flowers to be planted, planting dates, spacing between rows. Plan to plant tall crops on the north side of the garden so they don't shade the smaller plants, and plan to plant your rows going north and south.

Come to All Seasons and stroll through our garden store. Make yourself a list of the tools you will need, and stop in throughout the winter. We have seed starting kits if you choose to start your own seeds at home, which depending on the plant, may need to be done in the late winter. We have seeds for sale in late winter. And plan to stop in in May when we start selling vegetable plants that have been growing in our greenhouses.
